Prospect Watch: Freddy Fermin began his rehab assignment, serving as the designated hitter. The Padres’ starting catcher went 1-for-4 with an RBI. His lone hit came on a sharp ground ball that appeared to handcuff Dodgers shortstop Hyeseong Kim and easily could have been ruled an error. After taking so many foul tips off the mask this season, there’s a good chance the Padres give Fermin additional rehab time to get both his bat and timing back before returning. … El Paso allowed 18 baserunners over eight innings in the 9-2 loss. Daison Acosta made his second appearance since being activated from the injured list. After tossing two scoreless innings on Sunday, the 27-year-old who signed a major league deal in the offseason wasn’t as sharp Tuesday. He allowed three walks in 1.2 innings. He had walked just three batters over 11 rehab innings before being activated. Last season, Acosta posted a 0.90 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 30 innings at Double-A. … Mason McCoy was the lone Chihuahuas hitter with a multi-hit game on a night El Paso failed to record an extra-base hit and drew few walks. More notably, McCoy started in center field for just the second time this season and the sixth time in his 939-game minor league career. His .284 batting average is his highest since hitting the same mark at the High-A level in 2019.

Midland RockHounds 8, Missions 4
Key Stats: RHP Victor Lizarraga 3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; RHP Garrett Hawkins 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, BB, 3 K; 2B Carson Tucker 1-for-3, HR (1), BB; CF Kai Roberts 1-for-4, HR (3); DH Tirso Ornelas 1-for-4 HR (12); RF Braedon Karpathios 1-for-4, HR (8)
Prospect Watch: The Missions recorded just four hits, but all four left the yard on a hot, windy evening in Midland. Braedon Karpathios hit his eighth home run of the season, then helped preserve the lead an inning later by throwing out a runner at the plate. Coincidentally, the outfield assist was also his eighth of the year. Karpathios has been in a slump over the past few weeks, going 6-for-40, but two of those six hits have been home runs. … Tirso Ornelas added his team-leading 12th home run of the season. Since June 13, Ornelas has seven homers while striking out just 11 times. He has carried that hot stretch into July, batting .391 with a 1.203 OPS. … Carson Tucker hit his first professional home run since July 2023. The former first-round pick has enjoyed a career resurgence with the Missions, ranking fifth in the Texas League with a .291 batting average, but had struggled to get to much power. While he has already set career highs in several offensive categories, his lone home run also matches a career single-season high. … Righty Garrett Hawkins‘ rough season continued as the big reliever was charged with three earned runs on as many hits and a walk over 1.1 innings. He punched out three, but gave up several loud hits as well. It was the first time in three outings since being sent back to Double-A that Hawkins gave up a run.
West Michigan Whitecaps 14, TinCaps 1
Key Stats: RHP Winyer Chourio 2.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K; SS Justin DeCriscio 1-for-3, 2B, BB; CF Kasen Wells 1-for-4; LF Jack Costello 1-for-4, HR (10), RBI

Prospect Watch: After walking 25 batters in 51.2 innings over 12 appearances with Lake Elsinore, Winyer Chourio has now issued 12 walks in just 10.1 innings since his promotion to Fort Wayne. Chourio cruised through the first two innings, using his mid-90s fastball effectively the first time through the lineup. The second time around, however, hitters laid off his secondary pitches, which he struggled to locate, and waited for fastballs in the strike zone. Chourio walked three batters in the third inning and was unable to escape, surrendering a three-run home run to the final batter he faced. After posting a 3.31 ERA with the Storm, the 22-year-old owns an 8.71 ERA through his first three starts with the TinCaps. … The TinCaps attempted to rally when Jack Costello launched a towering home run to left-center field. The blast tied the career high of 10 he set last season. The former University of San Diego Torero is repeating High-A and has benefited from the extra experience. His OPS has improved from .640 last season to .754, fueled largely by an 80-point increase in slugging percentage. … Fort Wayne managed just three hits, with Justin DeCriscio the only player to reach base multiple times. While he hasn’t replicated the torrid pace he established in Lake Elsinore, where he posted a .907 OPS over the season’s first five weeks, DeCriscio has continued to provide steady production, batting .260 with a .779 OPS. He is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, going 8-for-21 with two walks, three stolen bases, a double, and a home run.
Storm 6, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4 (10 innings)
Key Stats: RHP Carlos Medina 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 4 K; RHP Sean Barnett 2 IP, ER, 3 K; SS Jorge Quintana 1-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 SB (19); LF Qrey Lott 3-for-3, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI; CF Conner Westenburg 0-for-3, BB, R, SB (35)

Prospect Watch: Sean Barnett did not allow a hit or a walk but was still charged with a blown save. The converted outfielder hit a batter before uncorking back-to-back wild pitches that allowed the tying run to score. He rebounded by tossing a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first professional victory. After posting a 21.09 ERA last season, Barnett has lowered that mark to 6.53 this year while averaging more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings and holding opponents to a .221 batting average. His command remains a work in progress, however, as he has walked 37 batters and hit seven more in 30.1 innings. … The hero in the 10th inning—and arguably the entire game—was Qrey Lott. Lott delivered the go-ahead double before scoring an insurance run later in the frame. Over his last two starts, he is 5-for-7 with five runs scored, three doubles, and a stolen base. He has posted a 1.121 OPS this month. … Carlos Medina matched the longest outing of his young career by pitching five innings for the second time. The 21-year-old allowed one run on five hits, striking out four without issuing a walk. Over his last four starts, Medina has walked just one batter in 13 innings. Signed out of the Mexican League last December, he continues to show encouraging progress with his command.
